Marijke Schreiner never thought she would make it this far in the hotel industry. Through hard work, she became a hotel manager at just 28ste Hotel Manager. In 2015, she was named Misset Hotel Personality of the Year by hospitality and hospitality peers. For almost 10 years, she has set the course for Stayokay.
CV
Marijke Schreiner started her career at Golden Tulip after the Hoge Hotelschool The Hague. She then held various management positions at NH Hotels and Hampshire Hospitality & Leisure. She completed her Master of Business Administration in 2002. Because her parents owned a hotel when she was ten, she was brought up on hotel management. Of course, this did not go without a hitch. She made several forays into other industries in her career, but she missed hospitality too much. Since 2008, she has been at the helm of Stayokay.
From musty youth hostel to modern hotel company
Marijke has single-handedly transformed Stayokay, a company with a long tradition that not so long ago had the image of musty youth hostels, into a modern hotel company very much focused on families. For over 85 years, the non-profit organisation has offered its (inter)national guests the base of operations at surprising locations throughout the Netherlands. Stayokay offers no unnecessary luxury, but rather well-kept, surprising (short) holiday and meeting accommodation in a relaxed atmosphere. With approximately 1 million overnight stays per year, Stayokay is the largest provider of budget accommodation in the Netherlands.
Marijke believes that despite the amount of knowledge and experience you have, you never know everything and there is always room to keep learning. Everyone can be wrong and no one is 100% perfect. If this is 80% then someone else can complement you with the remaining 20%. For Marijke, working with a complementary team is the best option. During the Hotel Leaders Network event, she will also share her knowledge.
